Akpa Akpro Joins Empoli on Loan From Lazio

Midfielder Jean-Daniel Akpa Akpro has officially joined Empoli on a season-long loan deal from Lazio.

The 29-year-old Ivorian midfielder failed to convince coach Maurizio Sarri over the last 12 months and it soon became clear this summer that he wasn’t in the plans for the foreseeable future. A number of clubs in Italy were interested in Akpa Akpro but the Tuscan side did enough to beat out their competition.

As announced by Empoli, Akpa Akpro has joined the club on a year-long loan deal from Lazio, adding a fresh face to the Tuscan side’s midfield. It’s unclear if the deal includes a permanence clause.

The Ivorian midfielder joined the Biancocelesti in September 2020 from Salernitana in a deal worth around €12.7m. During his two years in Rome, Akpa Akpro made 55 appearances across all competitions, scoring one goal and providing one assist. He never looked particularly convincing in Rome, failing to shine under either Simone Inzaghi or Sarri.
