Aron Winter Talks Lazio Memories, Sarri’s Squad & His Goal vs Napoli

Aron Winter during the Dutch Eredivisie match between Ajax Amsterdam and Feyenoord at Amsterdam ArenA on January 21, 2018 in Amsterdam, Netherlands.

Aron Winter looked back at his four years at Lazio, his vital goal against Napoli and his modern support for the Roman club.

The Dutchman was a part of the Biancocelesti squad from 1992 to 1996, being a reliable and strong option in the midfield. During his time in Rome, Winter made 156 appearances across all competitions, scoring 26 goals and providing two assists.

Speaking in the Lazio match programme (via LazioNews24), Winter first reflected on a goal he scored in a clash between Lazio and Napoli in May 1993.

I have many good memories of my time at Lazio. That goal against Napoli, for example, I’ll never forget it. It was a victory that allowed us to take Lazio back to Europe after so many years.

It was a wonderful feeling, especially because it came in front of our fans. We beat a very strong Napoli side, which had many champions like Ferrara, Careca and Zola in the squad.

The former midfielder touched on his four years with Lazio and how it felt to be a part of Serie A during the peak era.

Those were unforgettable years, I remember all the matches with pleasure because at the time Italian football was the most competitive in the world, with the best players.

At that time each team could sign a maximum of three foreigners, so if you weren’t Italian and you played in Serie A, it meant you were really strong.

He commented on some of the stronger players he worked with at Lazio.

It’s impossible to answer because I had so many! There was Boksic, Signori, Gascoigne, players of another level. I also remember Riedle and Doll, it was simply a pleasure to play with them.

Finally, Winter spoke about Maurizio Sarri’s Lazio and his maintained support for the club.

I’m following them and I like them a lot. Sarri is a great coach, he knows how to make his teams play well, as he showed with Napoli and last year as well.

Lazio have many quality players like Milinkovic-Savic, Luis Alberto, Pedro, Felipe Anderson and Immobile.

I always follow the Biancocelesti with great pleasure and I hope to see them in the top positions of the league at the end of the season.

Lazio and Napoli have had similar starts to the season, both picking up two wins and two draws each. A strong result tonight could be what’s needed to kickstart some momentum early in the campaign.
