Lazio Unhappy After Possible Overlooked Penalty in Loss to Napoli

Lazio were left frustrated in yesterday’s loss to Napoli after Mario Rui’s elbow on Manuel Lazzari didn’t lead to a penalty.

The Biancocelesti looked a little outclassed against Luciano Spalletti’s side last night, suffering a painful 2-1 defeat after taking an early lead. Lazio failed to impose themselves against Napoli, allowing the away side to dominate proceedings and take home all three points.

As detailed by Corriere dello Sport (via LazioNews24), in the second half Mario Rui was seen supposedly elbowing Lazzari in the face after the Lazio man tried to skip past him in the Napoli penalty area. Referee Simone Sozza was not interested and didn’t consider the call, infuriating the Biancocelesti.

Looking back at the incident, it does seem curious that Sozza didn’t at least consider a VAR check, especially because the Napoli full back’s elbow does appear to be fairly high and wide. Sergej Milinkovic-Savic was particularly enraged by the missed call, earning a booking for his protests.
