Caicedo: ‘I Would’ve Liked to Stay at Lazio for Longer’

Felipe Caicedo reflected on his time at Lazio, the most memorable moments and their failed Scudetto fight in the 2019-20 campaign.

The Ecuadorian forward spent four years of his career with the Biancocelesti from 2017 to 2021, being the backup centre forward in Rome. During his time with Lazio, Caicedo became a fan favourite for his hard work and last minute goals, something that still hasn’t been replaced following his departure last year.

Speaking to Lazio Style Radio (via La Lazio Siamo Noi), Caicedo first discussed his new adventure in Saudi Arabia and what Lazio means to him.

I recently arrived here at Abha and I’m happy with this new adventure. My memories in Italy are all linked to Lazio, my heart is there. I won the Supercoppa Italiana and from there it was perfect.

The first year was difficult but after that everything was easier, I settled in and we all know the story. Lazio and their fans are a difficult club to conquer, but it was difficult because the bar is always higher there.

He spoke highly about former teammate Ciro Immobile.

I was the backup for one of the best players in Italy, but with hard work and the help of staff and teammates I won everyone over.

I can’t explain what Ciro is, he doesn’t explain himself, just look at him. I am amazed by his mental strength, he helps his teammates, he is a leader inside and out, a phenomenon.

The 34-year-old Ecuadorian forward touched on his strong relationship with the Lazio fans.

I’ll never forget the goal in the derby, it was the most beautiful night. The 2018-19 season was the most important for me. I’m not very social, but when I’m there I talk to the fans. I get so many demonstrations of affection, I get teary-eyed reading those messages.

The relationship with Lazio fans has always been unique, different. The Biancocelesti fans are first in my heart and will always be that way. I would never have imagined staying so long at Lazio.

It’s not easy to fight against teams with a lot of money, but you have to give kudos to the management because they always manage to get to the top.

I would have liked to stay at Lazio for another four years, but unfortunately things didn’t turn out the way I wanted.

Caicedo remembered Lazio’s failed Scudetto push in the 2019-20 season.

Damn COVID, we were a strong, solid, good team. Everything was going perfectly. The 2019-20 year was important for us because we all believed in the Scudetto, us and the fans. I was the one shouting it.

He commented on his most important goal with the Biancocelesti.

The one against Cagliari because it gave us that shot to get to the top. I was on a high. The one against Juve with an assist from Correa was also important.

Finally, Caicedo underlined his continuing support for Lazio.

I still follow Lazio when I can and I cheer for them. You can see they already have an identity, they play well and I believe they will finish in the top four. This will be the year of confirmation.
