Lazio Prove Defensive Solidity in Early Stages of the Season

With the additions of Alessio Romagnoli and Ivan Provedel, Lazio now have a defence that matches their strong attack.

The Biancocelesti impressed during this first year under Maurizio Sarri last season, finishing fifth in the table. The team scored 77 goals, the second highest in Serie A, but conceded 58, far more than any other teams that finished in the top six spots last campaign. This leaky defence ultimately cost Lazio in their fight for Champions League qualification.

As highlighted by Corriere della Sera (via LazioNews24), Lazio now have a much stronger defence with Romagnoli and Provedel in the mix. Both players have immediately adapted to Sarri’s system and added further stability to the team’s backline.

After the opening seven Serie A matches this season, Lazio have only conceded five goals, the same amount as league leaders Napoli and less than Milan, Roma and Inter.

Whilst the 5-1 Europa League defeat to FC Midtjylland was an incredibly painful result, it was a wakeup call to the team, reminding them to stay focused and remain aware of their abilities.
