Marcos Antonio Working to Show His Best at Lazio

Marcos Antonio has not yet managed to show off his skills following his summer arrival at Lazio but he’s desperate to impress Maurizio Sarri.

The 22-year-old Brazilian midfielder arrived from Shakhtar Donetsk in the summer transfer window in a deal worth around €9m, being brought in as the long-term replacement for Lucas Leiva. Since his arrival, he’s only played 138 minutes out of a possible 810, remaining mostly on the bench.

As highlighted by Corriere dello Sport (via LazioNews24), Sarri appreciates Marcos Antonio’s technical skills but is convinced that the midfield needs to be at the right level to allow the 22-year-old to shine.

He’s been working hard at Formello during this international break and is hoping to make a bigger impact in the coming weeks, not wanting to remain sidelined for the rest of the season. Sarri is keeping a close eye on Marcos Antonio and is waiting for the right time to deploy him, but he may have to wait a little longer yet.

  1. I have written this multiple times already since his acquisition. Alonso has good technique but he has a long long way to go to become an incontrista. He is simply too small, not tough enough to play like a Lieva, Ledesma, Liverani type. That is why Cataldi is so important to Lazio at the moment as their options are limited.

When alonso plays sarri must surround him with complimentary tougher midfielders like Basic. He cannot play with Alberto as the midfield will be overrun. This results in Sarri having to make a number of tactical changes in order to play Alonso.
