Marusic on Path to 200 Lazio Appearances, His Role & Defensive Growth

Adam Marusic discussed his experiences with Lazio, his role under Maurizio Sarri and the team’s defensive growth this season.

The 29-year-old Montenegrin full back has played an important role since the arrival of the 63-year-old Italian coach last year, with his tactical flexibility and consistency proving key. Marusic has played every available minute in Serie A this season and is a core part of the squad in Rome.

Speaking in a press conference (via LazioNews24), Marusic first discussed Lazio’s mentality heading into the Sturm Graz clash.

After that defeat, we will definitely give everything to win. The approach wasn’t right, it’s something to improve on. It happened in that match, hopefully it won’t happen again.

He touched on his adaption to play as a left back.

I feel better on the left now, after a year, but it’s all the same to me. Right or left is the same, now I’ve learnt.

There’s a lot of talk about this left-back, but I do my job and every time I enter the pitch I want to give my best. When I feel good, I give everything to help my teammates.

The Montenegrin full back spoke highly about teammate Manuel Lazzari.

Lazzari is a great player, he has overcome injury and is playing well. I must continue to do well, not other things, then we’ll see what happens.

He discussed the fact that he’s fast approaching 200 appearances with Lazio.

I’m maybe 15 games away from reaching the milestone of 200 appearances with Lazio. When I arrived I hoped to stay as long as possible and I didn’t think so much about it.

That’s a lot, 200 games and I’m happy, I hope to make many more.

Finally, Marusic spoke about Lazio’s defensive growth this season.

We have improved so much because we are working so hard. We started well and we have to continue like this.

Last season, Marusic made 41 appearances across all competitions under Sarri, for a total of 3332 minutes. In that time, he scored one goal and did well both offensively and defensively.
