Matias Vecino failed to have a significant impact on proceedings in Uruguay’s painful World Cup loss to Portugal.
The 31-year-old midfielder is one of two Lazio players competing at the World Cup in Qatar, alongside fellow midfielder Sergej Milinkovic-Savic, and things have been a little more difficult for the Uruguayan, who has failed to truly impress on the world stage.
Vecino did little of note in Uruguay’s opening draw with South Korea and his work was even more disappointing in their loss to Portugal, coming off in the 62nd minute after an invisible performance.
The Uruguayan midfielder has proven himself a reliable figure under Maurizio Sarri this season but he’ll be disappointed with his play at the World Cup in Qatar. In the loss to Portugal, Vecino only completed 10 passes, made 23 touches and won one ground duel, failing to hit the mark for his national team.
Vecino will be praying that Uruguay manage to pick up a win over Ghana in their final group game, with a victory being their only route to the Round of 16.
