Caicedo: ‘Lazio Team of My Heart, Waiting to Return’

Former Lazio striker Felipe Caicedo underlined his desire to return to the Italian capital and how things are going for him in Saudi Arabia.

The 34-year-old Ecuadorian forward became a fan favourite in Rome during his four years with the club, known for his professionalism and ability to be decisive in the dying stages of matches. Caicedo scored 33 goals and provided 15 assists across 139 appearances for Lazio, leaving in the summer of 2021 for Genoa.

Speaking to Radiosei (via La Lazio Siamo Noi), Caicedo first discussed how he’s doing with Saudi outfit Abha and the idea of seeing Cristiano Ronaldo join the league.

Here in Saudi Arabia we have started playing again, things are going well. Recently I scored a goal very similar to the one I scored in the derby when Olsen was in goal.

I dribbled over the goalkeeper, I have that play! There’s a lot of talk about the arrival of Cristiano Ronaldo. If he were to arrive it would be great stuff, it would give the league a great leap forward.

The Ecuadorian forward reflected on his time with Lazio, his desire to return to the club in the future and how much he misses the Italian capital.

I miss Lazio so much, it’s the team of my heart, it’s my home. I’m waiting to return one day, I miss the environment, I miss my teammates, I miss the city. I’d like to come back, physically I’m fine.

I’m training well, I’ve found consistency in training, something I had lacked due to various injuries. Slowly I’m getting to top condition, physically and mentally. There are many memories, including that goal against Roma.

It was a unique moment, I remember the stadium full, it was a lot. I remember when at the Christmas dinner I made that joke about the Scudetto.

I really believed it, but not just me. We were confident, even if not everyone had the courage to say it publicly. Then came the pandemic.

Finally, Caicedo looked back at the World Cup in Qatar and the work of his native Ecuador.

I followed all the competitions, my Ecuador did well. They are guys with a lot of desire, I liked them.

Enner Valencia? He is an important player, he had a couple of matches without scoring, but he has experience and quality. He didn’t surprise me.

This season, Caicedo has made seven appearances across all competitions for Abha, scoring two goals.
