Agent: ‘Vecino Has Never Asked to Leave Lazio’

Alessandro Lucci, the agent of midfielder Matias Vecino, confirmed his client has no desire to leave Lazio, contrary to various rumours.

Recent whispers suggest that the 31-year-old is struggling after the World Cup in Qatar and could be sold to make way for a new backup striker. Vecino featured regularly in the first half of the season, appearing in all but one league match, but since the winter break he’s failed to make a single start, coming off the bench on three occasions.

Speaking to Gianluca Di Marzio (via LazioNews24), Lucci discussed his client Vecino and ruled out a move away from Lazio.

The rumours about Vecino surprise me. He has never asked to be sold. He’s very happy at Lazio and is well integrated within a very strong team. Matias is grateful to the club for the opportunity they gave him last summer.

The exertions of the World Cup have taken some energy away from him, also on a mental level, but he is overcoming what is simply a tough period and very soon he will be back to being the important player he was until recently.

The 31-year-old Vecino joined the Biancocelesti on a free transfer last summer, penning a three-year deal with the club. This season, he has scored three goals and provided one assist in 24 appearances across all competitions.

Vecino starting to edge Luis Alberto out of the starting lineup in the first half of the campaign, but the Spaniard has since rediscovered his magic after repairing his relationship with Maurizio Sarri.
