Luis Alberto: ‘I Don’t Want to End Things Badly With Lazio’

Luis Alberto reflected on his recent difficulties with Lazio, the approach from Cadiz last month and how he wants to end things in Rome.

The 30-year-old Spanish midfielder has had something of a frosty relationship with Maurizio Sarri since the coach’s arrival in the summer of 2021 and this came to the forefront in the first half of this season, when Luis Alberto was regularly left on the bench as Matias Vecino took on his starting spot.

Luis Alberto eventually mended things with Sarri and has begun returning to his best in 2023, starting in Lazio’s last five consecutive league outings, where he’s scored once and provided two assists.

Speaking to journalist Benni Arroyo on Twitch.tv (via Calciomercato.com), Luis Alberto first gave his thoughts on why Serie A has been unable to take on the top teams in European competition.

It’s a league that hasn’t evolved much. In Italy we play a lot with three-man defences, with man marking.

Napoli, Lazio, Sassuolo and Fiorentina are the only four teams that play a European style of football. Juve’s football is a bit different. Their point deduction? No comment.

He commented on the change in styles between Sarri and his predecessor Simone Inzaghi on the training ground.

We have the video room. We watch videos almost every day, they’re all long, and every now and then your eyes drop. The habits have changed compared to Simone Inzaghi.

Finally, Luis Alberto spoke about his recent issues with Lazio, the approach from Cadiz in the January transfer window and how he wants his time with the Biancocelesti to end.

I was not having a good time when I got the news that they wanted me. I really appreciated Cadiz’s interest, but in January it’s not easy. I don’t want to end things badly with Lazio. When I leave, I’ll talk to the president, the sporting director and the coach with whom I have a great relationship.

I owe almost everything to Lazio. The club and the fans love me. It would be stupid to break off badly with them. Until the last day I’ll give everything for Lazio, trying to get the team into the Champions League.
