Sarri: ‘There Are Still 16 Games Left, the War Is Long’

Maurizio Sarri felt that his Lazio side were close to getting back into the game at points before Atalanta secured their 2-0 win.

The Biancocelesti fell behind after just 23 minutes following a curling shot from Davide Zappacosta, putting them on the back foot for the majority of the match.

The home side saw far more of the ball, completing over 200 passes more than their opponents, but were unable to convert this into genuine chances, allowing Rasmus Hojlund to close out the match for Atalanta with his 65th minute goal.

Speaking to DAZN (via TMW) after the match, Sarri first discussed the qualities of Atalanta and how Lazio did have a chance to overturn their deficit.

We found a strong team in good condition, who played a high-level game. When they are like that, they create problems for everyone.

We reacted well to the disadvantage by creating two chances, but at the moment when it looked like we were putting them in trouble, on a loose ball we conceded the second goal and then we fell into confusion.

There are still 16 games left, the war is still long.

He touched on how his team struggle when teams come out to fight them.

We lost brilliance in the players who made the difference before. However, I saw a combative team, always inside the game.

It’s a pity we conceded the second goal when there was a feeling that we had them in trouble. I’m not too worried, we need to regain brilliance in certain players.

The Lazio coach was asked if it would be difficult to regain brilliance in his players with the Europa Conference League clash with CFR Cluj kicking off next week.

We’ll see. In the meantime, we have the ability to rest the players up front in turn and I hope this will bring them back to condition.

Finally, Sarri commented on Immobile’s poor run of form in the new year. The 32-year-old striker has only scored once in 2023, netting in the 2-1 loss to Lecce on 4th January.

He’s experiencing the problems of a guy who for six months has been doing 15 days on the pitch and 15 to 20 in the infirmary. I think it’s a purely physical issue.
