Lazio are gearing up for their first Europa Conference League outing, facing CFR Cluj in the play-off round, and doing well in the competition could bring them millions.
The Biancocelesti suffered relegation to the third tier of European competition after finishing third in a Europa League group containing Feyenoord, FC Midtjylland and Sturm Graz.
Sporting director Igli Tare gave an embarrassing interview back in October, when he suggested that the Europa Conference League is “a competition for losers like Roma”, words that’re now ironic considering the team’s drop from the Europa League.
As highlighted by La Lazio Siamo Noi, beat CFR Cluj in the play-off round of the Europa Conference League would bring Lazio around €600,000. Winning the trophy would be more lucrative, around €9 million, but it’s still a far cry from the revenues seen in the Europa League.
The Biancocelesti earnt around €10-12 million for their participation in the Europa League this season, showing the impact of European revenues and why the club should place a little more focus onto the competition.
