Sarri: ‘Lazio Showed Application, Focus & Intensity Across 90 Minutes’

Maurizio Sarri underlined his Lazio side’s consistency and wealth of options after their impressive 2-0 win over Salernitana.

The Biancocelesti never looked in doubt at the Stadio Arechi, dominating the home side and completing more than double the passes as they stormed to victory.

After a brief dip in form, Lazio now look to be slowly returning to their best, something they’ll be hoping to prove in their second leg clash with CFR Cluj in the knockout playoffs of the Europa Conference League.

Speaking in a press conference (via TMW), Sarri first discussed Lazio’s issues with set pieces and how he’s working to resolve it.

Actually, we might have a decent potential on set-pieces. We don’t exploit them very well, except for small periods. On Thursday we won on the development of an indirect free kick, and they saved another goal on the line.

Today we took ten corners with precision, although we didn’t get the best out of them. The ball arrived well in the expected area, the goalkeeper intervened, and it ended there. As far as I expect and the way we work, it’s normal to expect more.

He reacted to the Biancocelesti’s 2-0 win over Salernitana.

The worst day to face Salernitana. An international coach has arrived, in an extremely hostile stadium against a motivated and determined Salernitana.

If we hadn’t fielded the same weapons, we would have suffered a lot, here there is a top-level pitch and this allowed us to express ourselves with quality. I saw application, focus and intensity.

The 64-year-old Italian touched on a few things in particular that he was happy with.

In general, I’d say we did a good job. I saw plays at the right times, correct movements in both phases and a continuous and constant growth over the 90 minutes.

Sarri was asked if he feared a decline in quality without Mattia Zaccagni and Sergej Milinkovic-Savic.

I also liked the first half. In the first eight minutes and the last four there was some Salernitana chances, for the rest we did everything.

Vecino played 90 minutes on Thursday and today I saw him at a good level, the same goes for Cataldi. Luis Alberto allowed us to dribble with quality.

Everything can be improved, of course, but I’m happy. I’d like to mention that Romagnoli was also missing, he’s someone who builds up well, luckily Patric also has similar characteristics.

The Italian coach commented on his team’s ability to maintain focus throughout the 90 minutes.

I’ve always tried to analyse games objectively. Against Fiorentina we had a very poor physical condition, we took the point with intensity.

In Verona we drew against an opponent who, in this period, are winning them all. Today I saw a level Lazio, continuous throughout the 90 minutes. And that’s what I always want to see.

Finally, Sarri touched on the difference it makes having Immobile in the squad.

In some circumstances I saw a good Lazio even without him. Of course, it’s better to have him than not.
