Lazio sporting director Igli Tare underlined the strong bond between the club and Sergej Milinkovic-Savic and suggested that the team ‘can fight for’ the Scudetto in the near future.
Maurizio Sarri’s squad are still firmly involved in the race for a top four finish, sitting just two points behind fourth place Milan. The team have looked inconsistent this season but shown flashes of an electric and dominant side when everything goes right.
A key part of this season has been the conversation surrounding Milinkovic-Savic’s future. The Serbian star’s contract expires with the club in June 2024 and efforts to tie him down to a new deal have not born fruit yet, leaving things uncertain as the summer transfer window approaches.
Speaking to DAZN (via La Lazio Siamo Noi), Tare first discussed how difficult it is for Lazio to keep Milinkovic-Savic despite the interest.
It’s part of the game. Those who have played in Lazio create a strong bond with the city and the club. There are players who have played here for many years, and he is one of them.
He has a very strong bond with Lazio. What will happen will be the best for us and for him.
He was asked which player could guide the Biancocelesti to the Champions League.
It would be unfair to say just one name, but there are iconic players who are fundamental for such a goal. One of many who is also the symbol of the team is captain Ciro Immobile.
He spoke highly about new Arsenal midfielder Jorginho, who was rumoured to be a target of the Roman club.
He is the present and the future for every team. I saw the game this weekend and his goal against Aston Villa.
It was one of the best games I have seen in recent times. He fitted in well straight away given his qualities. He will make the fortunes of both teams.
Finally, Tare was asked if this season has taught him to be patient with coaches.
Not only that. Also create the basis for a team to fight for certain goals. Then there are so many factors that play a role, including luck, injuries…
We are aware that we have a team that can fight for such a goal (the Scudetto, ed), as the league table also says. But there is a long way to go from here to reach it.
We live from day to day and at the end we will draw the conclusions. Hiding now makes no sense. We will try to have our say from here to the end.
