Lazio will be relieved to pick up at least a point after a draining and disappointing draw with Thiago Motta’s Bologna.
The Biancocelesti had strung together some positive results after last month’s draw with Hellas Verona, picking up consecutive wins over Salernitana, Sampdoria and league leaders Napoli, but their mid-week loss to AZ Alkmaar clearly sapped the team’s energy ahead of their trip to Emilia-Romagna.
A win would’ve taken Lazio to second in the league table and put them in a strong position in the top four race, but Maurizio Sarri’s side were unable to find the right formula in Bologna, leaving them with just the scraps after a long 94-minute affair.
Bologna were the better time on the night, looking more comfortable in possession and having the lion’s share of shots, taking 16 with an xG of 0.92 compared to Lazio’s five with a 0.80 xG.
Ivan Provedel had another good game between the sticks for the Biancocelesti, making two key saves and playing an important role in the build-up play.
Matias Vecino also did well in midfield and Mattia Zaccagni looked dangerous on the wing, but none of their work was enough to find the back of the net.
It was a frustrating performance and result for Lazio, who’ll be hoping to bounce back in their second leg clash with AZ Alkmaar next week.
