Referee Ghersini to Be Punished After Poor Work in Lazio Loss to Torino

Referee Davide Ghersini will likely be sent back down to Serie B after his disappointing work in Lazio’s 1-0 loss to Torino.

The 38-year-old official did not keep control of the match in the Biancocelesti’s defeat to the Granata on Saturday, failing to maintain a consistent level of discipline and allowing physicality and strong challenges to go uncontested.

Lazio and their fans were furious with Ghersini during and after the match, feeling aggrieved by his decisions in a result that could have important implications for the top four race.

Corriere dello Sport (via LazioNews24) details how referee designator Gianluca Rocchi was also disappointed with Ghersini’s work in Lazio’s loss to Torino, believing that his performance was insufficient and saw too many missed calls for both teams.

The Italian referee is now likely to be sent back down to Serie B for the rest of the season, a league believed to be more suitable for his level.

Lazio are also furious about the impact of Ghersini and have asked the AIA – the Italian Referees Association – to pay greater care and attention at this crucial stage of the season.
