Why UCL Qualification Is Decisive for Sarri’s Project at Lazio

The top four race represents two different paths for Maurizio Sarri’s project at Lazio, with Champions League qualification being a vital push forward.

The Biancocelesti fell to Torino in a miserable 1-0 loss on Saturday but were happy to see other top four rivals like Roma, Juventus and Milan drop points in their own respective defeats.

Lazio still sit second in the Serie A table, allowing them to start thinking about the Champions League next season, but only nine points separate them from 7th place Atalanta, keeping things tense in the final stages of this season.

As highlighted by Corriere dello Sport (via LazioNews24), securing a Champions League spot is vital for Lazio and is now something of an obsession in Formello.

The Biancocelesti’s last half-yearly financial report showed a negative balance of €21 million, something that would be entirely offset by the Champions League and allow them to invest in the squad in the summer.

Failing to achieve a top four finish could force the Biancocelesti to take a step back in their project with Sarri, something that would be painfully disappointing after the highs of this season.
