Lotito: ‘Lazio Don’t Need to Sell in Order to Buy’

Lazio president Claudio Lotito took stock of the team’s transfer market plans, the work of Maurizio Sarri and the Sergej Milinkovic-Savic situation.

The Biancocelesti have been quiet in the early stages of this summer transfer window, working towards a number of targets but failing to pull off any deals.

Lazio secured a second-place finish in Serie A last season and Maurizio Sarri is hoping to welcome at least four or five new players this summer to help the team compete on multiple fronts.

Speaking to La Gazzetta dello Sport (via LazioNews24), Lotito was first questioned about Lazio’s lack of completed business in this transfer window.

It’s a sign that I had a lot of things to do, including campaigning in Molise. Now I’m dedicating myself to the team’s business. I have clear ideas.

I have a shortlist of names for each role we need to fill, with various alternatives. I will choose who to sign, but there is no doubt about one thing: the players will come, as always.

Do you know how many I signed last year? 14. Is that a little?

He touched on the work of coach Sarri.

Sarri is the conductor, and the conductor matters a lot. If he makes mistakes, everyone plays on their own. I was talking about harmony, he’s the one who gives it.

A team that wins doesn’t change, it integrates. And we integrate. We always talk about players to buy, but not selling them is also fundamental.

The Lazio president commented on the Milinkovic-Savic situation. The Serbian star only has a year left on his contract and his €40 million price tag risks scaring away suitors like Inter and Juventus.

I wouldn’t sell him, in fact I’m trying to renew his contract, but a contract is a meeting of the wills of all parties.

Certainly, Lazio don’t need to sell in order to buy. Too much importance is given to money, neglecting the person.

Lotito reflected on the departure of sporting director Igli Tare.

I’m in the process of completing a scouting centre with eight stations, with lots of people working. His departure hurt me after 18 years together, but he told me he wanted to leave. What was I to do?

He spoke about Lazio’s chances in the title race next season.

Anything is possible, history has shown that. At Lazio, Lenzini won it, then Cragnotti did. Leicester beat everyone in the Premier League. Unity of intent, compactness, harmony win. We have them.

Finally, Lotito was asked about Lazio’s interest in Sassuolo talisman Domenico Berardi.

I don’t sell dreams but solid realities. Goals are set, not announced.

  1. I would like to remind people who panic about Sergej leaving: the man gave his word he doesn’t leave Lazio for free so if he stays(which I hope) he will extend.

Glenn I love that you popped that question!
