Empoli Closing in on Lazio Forward Cancellieri

Empoli are in close contact with Lazio for forward Matteo Cancellieri and a deal could be completed this week.

The 21-year-old Italian joined the Biancocelesti from Hellas Verona last summer, arriving on a loan deal with an €8m obligation to buy clause attached. He struggled to impress in his debut season in the Italian capital, failing to directly contribute to a single goal across 30 total appearances.

Lazio have picked up both Valentin Castellanos and Gustav Isaksen this summer, reducing the amount of space available for Cancellieri in the coming season, making a departure in the coming weeks likely.

As reported by Gianluca Di Marzio, Empoli are looking to pick up Cancellieri and talks with Lazio are progressing quickly, so an agreement could be reached in the coming days.

It’s still unclear if it’ll be a loan move or a definitive transfer, and no figures have been confirmed.

Lazio are still expected to pick up a few more players this summer, like a new left back and backup goalkeeper.

  1. … and some cheap alternatives for the bench. An extra defender and midfielder. I don’t believe Gila, Farès or Bašić are suitable enough for Lazio goals nowadays.
