Monza are working to close out a deal with Lazio for unneeded midfielder Jean-Daniel Akpa Akpro.

The 30-year-old Ivorian midfielder returned to the Italian capital after spending last season on loan with Empoli, who were keen to retain his services for the new campaign.

Empoli had agreed a deal for Akpa Akpro and Hellas Verona were also interested, but now Monza have emerged to complicate matters.

As reported by Gianluca Di Marzio, Monza have unexpectedly entered the race for Akpa Akpro and have moved fast, quickly taking pole position in the race for the Lazio midfielder’s signature. A deal could now be finalised in the coming days.

Akpa Akpro is not part of Maurizio Sarri’s project in the Italian capital and has two years left on his contract with the club.

The Ivorian midfielder has scored one goal and provided one assist across 55 total appearances for Lazio since his arrival from Salernitana in September 2020.
