The Incredible Explosion of Provedel at Lazio

In a little over a year, Ivan Provedel has grown into a true star for Lazio, finally able to prove his abilities on the biggest stages.

The 29-year-old Italian shot-stopper has not had an easy career, bouncing around various provincial clubs like Spezia, Empoli and Chievo Verona since making his first team debut a decade ago.

Lazio Transfer

After an impressive final season in Spezia, Lazio picked up Provedel for around €2m in the summer of 2021, picking him up to be their new backup goalkeeper alongside first-choice option Luis Maximiano.

It didn’t take the Italian shot-stopper long to start shining in the Italian capital. Maximiano was given a red card just six minutes into the season opener against Bologna, immediately thrusting Provedel into action, far earlier than expected.

He immediately rose to the task and Maurizio Sarri quickly decided to promote him to the first-string option, leaving the Portuguese goalkeeper on the bench after his disastrous six-minute debut.

First Season in Rome

In Provedel’s first season with Lazio, he broke numerous clean sheet records, managing to keep 21 in 38 Serie A appearances, the best in the club’s history. While this can partly be explained by the defensive setup, personal credit also goes to the 29-year-old.

In his debut season with the Biancocelesti, the Italian goalkeeper produced a post-shot expected goals minus goals allowed (PSxG-GA) of +2.4, the fifth-best in the league and third-best out of all the regular starters. The stat essentially suggests that he stopped an extra 2.4 goals, based on the quality of shots faced across the season.

Provedel was a key reason why Lazio secured a second-place finish in Serie A last season, with his consistent and confident work between the posts playing a crucial role in forming the best defence in the league, taking the club back to the Champions League after a two-year absence.

2023-24 Campaign

Pressure would’ve undoubtedly been high on Provedel in his first-ever Champions League appearance, but the 29-year-old rose to the occasion once again, producing a handful of key saves across the match. In the dying seconds, he pulled off the unthinkable – scoring the equaliser, securing a vital point for Sarri’s side.

Provedel’s goal was the cherry on top of his incredible performance, again proving his position as one of the most important players in the new Lazio project, earning him much-deserved plaudits from across Europe.
