Caicedo: ‘No Question About Immobile, He Deserves Respect’

Former Lazio striker Felipe Caicedo is overjoyed with the Champions League win over Celtic and defended his old teammate Ciro Immobile.

The Biancocelesti edged out a key 2-1 win over Celtic in their second European outing, taking home all three points after a last-minute header from Pedro. The result leaves Maurizio Sarri’s side tied at the top of their Champions League group on four points.

One Lazio player who has been particularly criticised this season is Immobile, who has netted just twice across nine games. Some fans have started to call for greater usage of new signing Valentin Castellanos.

Speaking to Il Messaggero (via LazioNews24), Caicedo first reacted to Lazio’s Champions League win over Celtic.

How great! I only saw the match highlights, unfortunately there is a two-hour time difference in Dubai, and I couldn’t enjoy the matches against Atletico and Celtic. However, I am delighted that Lazio are leading the group with four points in the Champions League.

He was asked about the ‘Caicedo zone’ – a period in the final moments of the game where he’d often score, something the Biancocelesti have done recently.

It means that I left something else behind, beyond the heart. I carry that definition inside me, it comes from the goals I scored when everyone thought it was over. A unique feeling.

Remaining focused until the last moment is an added value, it can be decisive in football. It’s a virtue of mine to never give up, but don’t forget that it’s also Lazio’s motto.

The Ecuadorian striker reflected on Lazio’s failed Scudetto bid in the 2019-20 season, which was derailed by the COVID pandemic.

I believed in it, we all believed in it inside Formello. Unfortunately, the pandemic stopped us and shattered a dream. The climb had started with my favourite goal against Cagliari in the 98th minute.

That header had sent me into total ecstasy, perhaps more so than the 1-1 draw against Juventus at the Olimpico.

I hope Pedro’s goal unblocked the team, the schedule had a big influence. Last year I believed in second place and now I believe in a return to the Champions League, despite the bad start this season.

We must find the identity and solidity in defence, as well as wickedness in attack. The results will come back.

Finally, Caicedo defended his former striking partner Immobile.

He’s in a negative moment and needs to be helped. The team is playing less for him, who lives for the goal.

The wings, everyone, must serve him better. But Immobile can’t be questioned, he’s history and he’s still a 20-goal man in the league. The bomber deserves respect.
