Mattia Zaccagni has left the Italy squad and returned to Lazio after an ankle injury ruled him out of action.

The 28-year-old Italian winger didn’t initially join the Azzurri squad following Luciano Spalletti’s call, but later joined his compatriots at Coverciano, hoping to be fit in time for the clash with England on 17th October.

Zaccagni has started in all 10 of Lazio’s matches this season but came off uncharacteristically early in the 3-2 win over Atalanta before the international break.

As confirmed in a statement (via LazioNews24), Zaccagni is unavailable for Italy’s upcoming Euro 2024 qualifier with England due to an ankle injury, so will return to Rome to continue his recovery with Lazio.

The Biancocelesti will be hoping for the 28-year-old winger to recover in time for the game against Sassuolo on 21st October.

This season, Zaccagni has scored one goal and provided one assist in 796 minutes of action across 10 matches.
