Lazio centre back Nicolo Casale is struggling to show his best after being falsely accused of being involved in the recent Serie A betting scandal.

Gossip columnist Fabrizio Corona, who has a long criminal record, publicly accused the 25-year-old defender of being one of the players to have placed bets on football match, a serious allegation that could carry a multi-year suspension.

Casale has not been involved in the investigation into illegal betting platforms and has already launched legal action against Corona and the editors who published the allegations. Two players who were involved, Nicolo Fagioli and Sandro Tonali, have already received lengthy suspensions.

Il Messaggero (via LazioNews24) details how Casale is still struggling with poor focus and spotty form following the allegations, putting his starting spot in the Lazio squad at risk for the time being.

Maurizio Sarri is ready to deploy Patric in his place against Fiorentina, giving Casale some time to recover and return his focus to football.
