Maurizio Sarri surprised everyone by unexpectedly resigning from his post at Lazio, making his feelings clear to the squad.

The Biancocelesti have been in fairly dire form across their 2023-24 campaign, only finding a few positives in the Champions League group stages and Coppa Italia, where they’ll face Juventus in the semi-finals. In Serie A, inconsistency has reigned supreme, leaving them in the mid-table with 10 games left.

Following the 2-1 loss to relegation candidates Udinese on Monday, Sarri decided to have a frank conversation with his Lazio squad at Formello, where he ultimately decided to call it quits and resign, handing in his notice to the club’s management with immediate effect.

Journalist Alfredo Pedulla revealed what Sarri said to his Lazio squad ahead of his resignation, making his feelings apparent.

I saw that you no longer follow me, some are too different from last season. I’ve decided to resign, otherwise I would’ve had to kick some of you out. If I’m the problem, I’ll step aside so you can shake up the season. Enough.

Lazio are now looking around for the right replacement for Sarri, who resigned with immediate effect. For the time being, his assistant coach Giovanni Martusciello is leading the squad.

  1. I’m perplexed.

I understand him, I agree with him, I blame him all at the same time.

No real support from Lotito has had it’s say in the end.

I wish you all the best Sarri, you did the best you could in the circumstances.
