Lazio Aiming to End Abysmal Coppa Italia Run Against Juventus

Lazio will be looking to exorcise their Juventus woes in the Coppa Italia by beating their foes tomorrow evening at the Stadio Olimpico.

The two sides will lock horns in the Italian capital for the second leg of the domestic cup semi-final. The Old Lady has the edge after prevailing by two unanswered goals in the first leg played in Turin earlier this month. Federico Chiesa and Dusan Vlahovic were both on target for Max Allegri’s side.

As Il Corriere dello Sport (via La Lazio Siamo Noi) notes, the Biancocelesti have been dreadful in their last meetings against the Bianconeri in the Coppa Italia. In fact, they lost all four fixtures, and weren’t able to score a single goal.

Obviously, the most recent encounter was the first leg at the Allianz Stadium. But the two sides also met in the quarter-final of the previous edition, with Gleison Bremer nodding home the solitary goal. Juventus also emerged victorious in the two previous occasions; the final of the 2016/17 edition and the quarter-finals of 2015/16 when Stephan Lichsteiner scored the winner against his former employers.

The last time Lazio managed to find the back of the net against Juventus in the Coppa Italia dates back to the final of the 2014/15 edition. Ex-Lazio captain Stefan Radu scored in the 4th minute, but Giorgio Chiellini equalized for the Bianconeri, with Alessandro Matri sealing the win in extra time.

Therefore, the Biancocelesti will be eager to end this woeful run with a positive result tomorrow. Otherwise, they could equal Catanzaro’s run of five defeats in a row against Napoli without scoring a goal.
