Lazio almost managed to grind out an impressive win over Scudetto champions Inter until a late equaliser spoilt their evening at San Siro.
The Biancocelesti have been growing under coach Igor Tudor over the last two months and their maturity was visible in their trip to the Stadio Giuseppe Meazza, but it wasn’t enough to help them secure all three points against Simone Inzaghi’s high flying Nerazzurri.
Inter had the first real chance of the match through Marcus Thuram but Lazio almost managed to snatch an early lead through Valentin Castellanos, whose slick shot easily beat Yann Sommer. Unfortunately for the Argentine striker, it was chalked off by VAR for an offside in the build-up.
The Nerazzurri tried to find a response as the first half went on, but the visitors looked solid in defence, limiting the danger as they held firm in the final third.
In the 32nd minute, a thunderous shot from Daichi Kamada outside the penalty area flew into the far corner, beating Sommer to ripple the back of the net and put Lazio 1-0 up over Inter, dampening the mood amongst the home fans at San Siro.
Inter were not willing to see their Scudetto party spoiled and continued to push for an equaliser in the second half, hitting the post in the 58th minute through a Lautaro Martinez header.
Lazio tried to hold on to grind out a tough 1-0 win, but their focus dipped at the wrong moment in the 87th minute; a free kick from Alexis Sanchez sailed into the box and was met by a mostly unmarked Denzel Dumfries, whose header flew past Ivan Provedel to hit the back of the net, tying it up at 1-1.
It was a frustrating but still decent performance from the Biancocelesti, who now have one match left in the 2023-24 season, facing Sassuolo on May 26th.
