Lazio midfielder Matias Vecino has no plans to leave the club this summer despite running on an expiring contract.

The 32-year-old has been playing his football at the Stadio Olimpico since completing a free transfer from Inter Milan in the summer of 2022. While he hasn’t always played as a starter, he proved to be a reliable rotation option in Maurizio Sarri’s plans and also played an important role during Igor Tudor’s brief spell at Formello.

According to Il Corriere dello Sport (via LazioNews24), the Uruguayan is now determined to stay at the club and fight for a place in Marco Baroni’s tactical system. Vecino has already communicated his decision to club President Claudio Lotito.

Vecino Plans to Stay at Lazio

As the Roman newspaper explains, the experienced midfielder would like to fulfill his contract which runs until June 2025. At the end of the season, the two parties will decide whether to renew their collaboration or part ways. The report adds that Baroni is in favour of the veteran’s stay as he appreciates the qualities he offers.

Vecino has been a staple in Serie A since signing for Fiorentina in January 2013. He also had stints on loan at Cagliari and Empoli. His most high-profile spell was at Inter between 2017 and 2022 during which he won a Scudetto title under Antonio Conte’s guidance.
