Cataldi Future at Lazio Shrouded in Doubt as Rift Grows

The future of Danilo Cataldi at Lazio is shrouded in doubt following his disappointment regarding the decision to name Mattia Zaccagni as the new captain.

The 29-year-old Italian midfielder was bitterly upset not to be handed the captain’s armband following Ciro Immobile’s transfer to Besiktas earlier this month, believing he deserved the honour due to his long ties to the club and progression up their youth system.

Some Lazio players expected Zaccagni to refuse the honour in order to allow Cataldi to take on the armband, a situation that forced President Claudio Lotito to intervene, essentially telling the midfielder to calm down and stay professional.

As reported by Il Messaggero (via La Lazio Siamo Noi), Cataldi’s future with Lazio hangs in the balance following the latest rift and the club will need to resolve things should he stay in the capital for the 2024-25 season.

He was put on the transfer market this month and offered to Torino and Cagliari without being told, further causing tension. The 29-year-old has no intention of leaving the Biancocelesti unless forced out.
