New Lazio manager Marco Baroni has reportedly made a decision over the tactical formation he’ll adopt ahead of the upcoming campaign.

The 60-year-old is planning to implement a 4-3-3 lineup instead of the previously suggested 4-2-3-1. The coach unleashed three central midfielders in the most recent friendly against Hansa Rostock, and the Roman newspaper expects him to continue with this experiment.

This formation should suit the vast majority of the squad, especially those who struggled to adapt to Igor Tudor’s 3-4-2-1 system during the final stages of the previous campaign. In fact, this was one of the main factors that led to the Croatian’s exit at the end of the season, especially with the management unwilling to grant him the major squad overhaul he requested.

Baroni fielded Nicolo Rovella as a deep-lying playmaker, supported by Mateo Guendouzi and Matias Vecino in the box-to-box roles. This tactical tweak paid dividends, with the Biancocelesti prevailing by three unanswered goals. Although it was a mere friendly, the positive signs could encourage the former Hellas Verona tactician to maintain this formation permanently.

Lazio Manager Baroni to Adopt 4-3-3 Formation

So when Lazio’s Serie A campaign kicks off on August 18th, we will likely see a 4-3-3 formation on paper against Venezia. The Italian capital side will be looking to bounce back following a disappointing campaign, so the players will be determined to start on the right foot.

In addition to the domestic league, Lazio will be hoping to go far in Europe this time around. The club competed in the Champions League last term but were eventually overpowered by Bayern Munich in the Round of 16. But this season, the Biancocelesti will participate in the Europa League, so they should have more realistic chances of reaching the final stages of the tournament.

In the meantime, it remains to be seen how the management will proceed on the market. Introducing new blood to the squad has been the main theme of their summer campaign. The club bid farewell to its senators Ciro Immobile, Felipe Anderson and Luis Alberto, and even Danilo Cataldi could follow suit after being snubbed for the captaincy in favour of Mattia Zaccagni.

On the other hand, the Aquile brought in Loum Tchaouna, Tijjani Noslin, Fisayu Dele-Bashiru and Nuno Tavares. Moreover, the club is still aiming for one more addition in attack, with Armand Laurienté considered as the favourite for the role. Lazio are currently negotiating with Sassuolo, trying to find common ground.
