Southampton Make First Contact With Young Belgian Winger Also Targeted By Lazio

Lazio risk missing out on Matias Fernandez-Pardo as Southampton have reportedly entered the race for the young Belgian.

The KAA Gent starlet is one of several young profiles the Biancocelesti are monitoring this summer. The club is looking to sign a U22 player as their senior list is already full, so they would have to offload one of their current ranks to make room for a new signing above the age of 22.

Over the past few weeks, Fernandez-Pardo has been heavily linked with a move to the Italian capital. But according to Belgian football journalist Sacha Tavolieri, Southampton have now made initial contacts for the 19-year-old. The Saints are in talks with the player’s entourage, as they look to bolster their squad following their return to the Premier League.

Southampton Could Usurp Lazio in Fernandez-Pardo Race

Tavolieri also reveals that Lazio had made tried to acquire the services of the Belgium U19 international, but to no avail. The Biancocelesti put €10 million on the plate, but their offer was turned down by Gent who are keen to maintain the player’s services.

Nevertheless, the youngster would like to leave the nest and try a new experience. And although England isn’t his preferred destination, Southampton are keen admirers, so they will try their best to lure him to St Mary’s Stadium.

Fernandez-Pardo started his career with Lille before returning to his native Belgium in 2020 through the gates of Gent. His contract with the club runs until June 2026. The youngster is a right-footed player who primarily plays as an inverted left winger.
