Young Lazio Winger Has Five Serie A Suitors as Genoa Join the Queue

Matteo Cancellieri might be an outcast at Lazio, but he’s apparently a wanted man in Serie A, as Genoa have emerged as his latest suitor.

The 22-year-old is a Roma academy product who rose to prominence during his stint at Hellas Verona. The Biancocelesti thus decided to bring him to the Italian capital in the summer of 2022. However, the young man couldn’t carve himself an important role in Maurizio Sarri’s plans, so the Biancocelesti sent him on loan to Empoli last season where he enjoyed a decent campaign.

According to Italian journalist Alfredo Pedullà, the Tuscan club would like to secure the player’s services for another season, especially since he played an integral role in the club’s dramatic salvation. However, Como, Monza and Parma have all inquired about Cancellieri, so the race for his signature is sure to be a heated one; especially as a fifth club has expressed interest.

Italian journalist Gianluca Di Marzio reveals that Alberto Gilardino’s Grifone are looking to revamp their attacking department. They have already sold Mateo Retegui to Atalanta, while Fiorentina are keen to sign Albert Gudmundsson.

However, Genoa won’t relinquish the Icelandic star before securing a direct replacement, and this might well be Cancellieri. Di Marzio claims the Ligurians have been vigorously pushing to seal a deal for the Lazio wantaway.

The winger contributed with four goals and three assists in 36 Serie A appearances last season. His contract with Lazio runs until June 2027.

  1. Irony is evryone beside lazio is interested in him. Fact is lazio should buy talented young Italian if they dont have any use for him in favour of foreigners. You sabotage their careers buly loaning them every season. They need stabilty to progress. Stabilty which u provide to every overrated foreigner.
