Lazio Continue to Pursue Southampton Midfielder for Two Main Reasons

Lazio are still tracking young Southampton midfielder Carlos Alcaraz, as he could be the right fit for the club from several perspectives.

The Biancocelesti have been linked with the Argentine over the past few weeks, but recently, the management seemingly turned its attention towards Napoli wantaway Michael Folorunsho who emerged as their main target to enhance the middle of the park.

Nevertheless, Il Corriere dello Sport (via LazioNews24) claims Lazio still have their reasons to pursue Alcaraz.

Why Lazio Remain Interested in Alcaraz

Firstly, the Saints star can play either as a box-to-box midfielder or in a more advanced role up the pitch. Hence, he would fit within Marco Baroni’s tactical scheme which varies between 4-3-3 and 4-2-3-1.

And aside from the tactical aspect, signing Alcaraz would also resolve the club’s dilemma regarding the squad list. The Biancocelesti cannot register a player above the age of 22 before offloading one of their own, as their senior list is already saturated. Nevertheless, Alcaraz is only 21, so Lazio can simply add him to the youngsters’ list.

The La Plata native started his career at Racing Club before signing for Southampton in January 2023. Last winter, he joined Juventus on loan for the second half of the season, but didn’t quite make an impression, so the Bianconeri opted against keeping him on a permanent basis.

  1. Folorunsho is “trained in Lazio”, and we currently only use those 4 spots (also for EL, where there are much more requirements for list-B) for Furlanetto (in EL) and Cataldi. So Furlanetto is a free extra squad member in all competitions, where Alcaraz only is in Serie A.
Considering Cataldi cannot be replaced in the squad (again “trained in Lazio”), and Rovella, Vecino, Guen, DB and Castro are all excellent players for what we are doing this season, then obviously Folorunsho must be our primary target, and Alcaraz (who behaved improper in our friendly in Southampton) can only be viewed as an emergency alternative.

    1. Correction:
“So Furlanetto is a free extra squad member in all competitions, where Alcaraz only is in Serie A.”
Furlanetto there should have been Folorunsho..
