Life After Ciro Immobile: Who Will Step up for Lazio This Season?

Ciro Immobile’s summer move to Besiktas in the Turkish Süper Lig after eight goal-laden years in the Italian capital has left Lazio with a huge problem to solve at the top end of the pitch. Immobile made quite the impact for the Biancocelesti since his arrival in 2016 from Sevilla, having notched 207 goals to become the club’s all-time leading scorer and playing an integral role in the Italian Cup and the Italian Super Cup victories.

What does life for Lazio look like after Immobile? Who are the players who could step up to the mark and become the next great Lazio goalscorer this season and beyond to ensure the team is once again battling for the European qualification spots in Serie A?

Who Will Replace Immobile at Lazio?

Argentine striker Taty Castellanos now has free reigns to lead the lines at the club. With a full Pre-Season under new coach Marco Baroni, new tactics, and the weight of Lazio’s All-Time Top Scorer off of his shoulders, he will get the chance he has been waiting for to prove his worth this season under a rejuvenated Lazio.

The second player is Salernitana’s Boulaye Dia, who was a target for several months, and finally signed ahead of the start of the Serie A campaign. The French-born Senegalese player scored an impressive 16 Serie A goals in 33 games two seasons ago but missed around half of last season due to various injuries and off-field issues as the team was relegated to Serie B. Dia has certainly proven himself to be too good to play at that level and could be exactly what Lazio needs to help cope with the loss of Immobile.

The Loss May Not Sting as Much

Despite losing one of the most excellent stars Lazio has ever seen in its club, Immobile’s departure for Turkey might not be painful. Replacing him with a young star can alleviate what might be unbearable for some of Lazio’s longtime fans. This is also true for those betting on European soccer games, such as Italy’s Serie A and other leagues.

While Immobile has provided somewhat of a guarantee of goals for several years now, it may have been the right time to move on and look for an injection of youth into the team. After a particularly red-hot run of 83 goals in three seasons, the last two campaigns have yielded a comparatively low 12 and 7 goals respectively. If Lazio want to continue near the top of Serie A and go far in the Coppa Italia and in Europe, perhaps the team shouldn’t be built around one player, and the goals should come from other sources – hence the signings of Dia, Loum Tchaouna, Tijjani Noslin, Fisayo Dele-Bashiru, and Gaetano Castrovilli.

Hope for the Future

The departure of Ciro Immobile might be one of Lazio’s most significant losses in recent years, but hopes are high that the team can still move forward with a new-look strike force.
