Lazio Unveil Europa League Squad List – Italian Midfielder Dropped

Lazio have officially released their squad for both Serie A and the Europa League, with Gaetano Castrovilli being the most glaring omission on the latter list.

The Biancocelesti’s domestic squad features 21 players above the age of 22. Clubs are allowed to register an unlimited number of Under-22 players, so new signing Loum Tchaouna and third-choice goalkeeper Alessio Furlanetto have been placed on the youth squad, making extra room on the senior list. Elseid Hysaj, Toma Basic and Jean-Daniel Akpa Akpro still didn’t make the cut.

Baroni Omits Castrovilli from Lazio Europa League List

But on the contrary, Tchaouna and Furlanetto don’t qualify as Lazio youth players according to UEFA regulations, so the club had to register them on the 22-man senior list. Therefore, Marco Baroni had a tough decision to make, and eventually opted to exclude Gaetano Castrovilli from the squad.

Many believed the Lazio coach had to choose between omitting the former Fiorentina man or Pedro Rodriguez, but eventually decided to keep the veteran winger on the list. According to LazioNews24, Castrovilli’s shaky physical condition was the main reason behind the call.

The 27-year-old endured torrid times with injuries over the last few campaigns, and the source suggests he might struggle to play twice per week.
