How Much Exiled Lazio Trio Weigh On Club’s Wage Bill

Despite being linked with an exit for several months, Elseid Hysaj, Toma Basic and Jean-Daniel Akpa Akpro have thus far remained at Lazio. And with the transfer market already shut in the vast majority of European countries, the window of opportunity is almost closed.

All three players have been omitted from Marco Baroni’s squad list for both the Serie A and the Europa League. Therefore, the exiled trio could be set to stay on the sidelines for the remainder of the season, or at least until the January Transfer Window offers them new escape routes.

But in the meantime, Lazio will have to spend some of their resources on these three players who aren’t part of the technical project. Il Corriere dello Sport (via LazioNews24) reveals the total cost of maintaining the unwanted players.

Lazio Redundancies Will Cost Lazio €6.4 Million

Hysaj boasts the highest wages among the three. The Albanian fullback earns €3.7 million net per year. His contract is valid until June 2026, so finding him a buyer who’s willing to match these figures proved to be a daunting task.

For his part, Basic collects €1.8 million per year. The Croatian insists he would have been happy to accept a pay cut to push a return to his former club Hajduk Split, but Lazio President Claudio Lotito blocked the operation. The source suggests that the Biancocelesti chose to keep the 27-year-old at Formello so they could rely on his services in case of an emergency.

Finally, Akpa Akpro earns €900 thousand per season, which means that three players have a combined net salary of €6.4 million. The Ivorian was reportedly holding out for a return to Monza, but the call from Adriano Galliani never came.

As further explained by Lazio Fan & Economist LeastSquares, when taking the amortization of each of the three players into account, the total cost actually is closer to €11 million…

  1. There is nothing to complain about this situation. They all have valid contracts with Lazio. So put them in the field to repay their earnings. Coppa Italia and UEL will be the way to use them and then try to offload all of them again in January.
