New Lazio signing Gaetano Castrovilli has revealed the reasons that led to his omission from the club’s Europa League squad list.

While leaving out the likes of Elseid Hysaj, Jean-Daniel Akpa Akpro and Toma Basic was expected, Marco Baroni still had a tough decision to make when presenting his European list for UEFA. It eventually came down to a choice between Castovilli and Pedro; in the end, the Lazio coach opted to rely on the services of the Spanish veteran who has already won the competition with Chelsea.

Nevertheless, Castrovilli insists it was part of a plan he and the club agreed upon, as he’s still trying to regain his optimal physical condition after several injury-plagued campaigns. The Euro 2020 winner revealed as much in a story posted on his Instagram account (via La Lazio Siamo Noi).

The choice not to play the group stage of the Europa League is part of a plan that the club and I share. There was no exclusion and there are no physical complications.

The season will be long and the goal is to give my best throughout the campaing. I’m physically fine and I work every day with enthusiasm, to help my teammates recover. Forza Lazio!

Castrovilli ended his Fiorentina stint at the end of the previous campaign following a long injury ordeal. Yet, Lazio decided to bet on the Italian midfielder, signing him on a free transfer in July.
