Lazio left-back Nuno Tavares was thrilled after finally earning his first senior cap for the Portuguese national team.
The 24-year-old joined the Biancocelesti in the summer, completing a loan move from Arsenal with an option to buy. From the early week of the campaign, the former Benfica star presented himself as one of the best revelations in Serie A. He currently leads the league’s assist charts with eight, more than any other defender in the Top Five European leagues.
Undeniable Form
Following his remarkable exploits, Roberto Martinez could no longer deny him a spot in Portugal’s squad. Tavares made his first appearance for the senior national team in the 5-1 routing victory over Poland in the UEFA Nations League, coming in as a late substitute for Nuno Mendes.
Nuno Tavares Ecstatic with Portugal Debut
In his post-match interview (via La Lazio Siamo Noi), Tavares expressed his delight with the opportunity, while realizing he must continue to deliver the goods if he wishes to maintain his spot amidst the tough competition for places.
I’m happy with my first appearance in the national team and moreso with the victory. I know it’s difficult to get here, there’s a lot of competition, but I like to be among the best and that’s the most important thing. The competition is pushing us towards higher levels. I’ll continue to work hard to keep my spot with Portugal.
Secret Behind His Lazio Exploits
On another note, Tavares explained how Lazio’s attacking-minded football is helping him produce his best form.
We have a good squad at Lazio, which is the most important thing . We have the flair, the right chemistry and we are managing to put everything into practice. When you play for a team that maintains possession and is often in the opposition’s areas, it is easier to stand out.
Oleee olee olee oleeeee Nunoooo Nunoooo 💙
He´s best leftback what I have seen in Lazio. Hope he stays for years.
Very special, which is why it is so annoying that after 3 years on loan, some Arsenal fans are begging for him to return to London and “fight for his place”!
It is Nuno at Lazio that is special and there’s no way he’d take this magic spell back to Arsenal and I’m certain that he will remain and enter the Lazio pantheon of legends!
