Lazio manager Marco Baroni made a mea culpa following his side’s shocking 0-5 defeat at the hands of Bologna.
Humbling Defeat for Lazio
The Emilians suddenly rose to fourth place in the table, also taking advantage of Juve’s 0-3 loss in Florence, while the woeful Biancocelesti dropped to 6th, with their Champions League hopes now looking in great risk.
Maro Baroni Apologises to Lazio supporters
After the final whistle, the irritated travelling supporters summoned the players towards the away end for a word. A circulating video captured the moment, as Baroni did his best to shield the players from the ultras’ wrath by insisting this was his own doing.
It’s my fault. The team has nothing to do with it. The responsibility is mine, okay? I apologize to you, I apologize to everyone.

La responsabilità è mia, va bene? Vi chiedo scusa, chiedo scusa a tutti”. pic.twitter.com/kFTF3b71vQ— LazioSpace (@SpaceLazio) March 16, 2025
Luckily this exchange ended with the fans and the players exchanging applause, so one could say Baroni’s intervention paid dividends. Afterwards, the manager went on to explain the shocking result in his post-match press conference (via LazioNews24), while emphasizing the physical factor and the strength of his opponents.
You should never forget defeats. We found an opponent with so much more physical and mental presence, and we conceded the avoidable goal. Then we allowed back-to-back goals in the second half which led the team to give up, especially if you face a team that is doing very well.
It’s a shame about the result, we knew it was a difficult match, they play with great energy, whereas we had many away games recently.
Marco Baroni Justifies Lazio Second-Half Changes
Lazio looked increasingly worse with every substitution made, with the likes of Gustav Isaksen and Mattia Zaccagni hauled off early. Baroni had to explain the reasons behind his perplexing changes, citing the squad’s physical decline due to the packed schedule.
We need to recover energy and recover some players who are not at their best. Marusic was not in perfect condition, but I didn’t want to risk Hysaj. Nuno told me he was having issues, so we preferred not to risk him. Adam sacrificed himself. He has always been present. Isaksen was also not at his best.
I don’t ‘kill’ my players, I protect them. Zaccagni was doing well but I knew he was tired as was Isaksen. I’d rather lose a match than a player, especially now. I took Guendouzi off because he was on a yellow card and the same thing with Vecino.
I don’t understand it. From our starters only Marusic and Romangoli are 30 or older. The others are youngsters. Before the season we bought several Africans who they say are more naturally athletic and agile. Then where is the speed? We play so slow… I had to watch Atalanta vs. Inter to heal my eyes and they were running all the time. How come? They also play European competitions. They are not tired? How come? They are all professional footballers. They have no other responsibility only to be in top notch form. Tavares is the only player who can run that grass is burning. What about the rest??

Real poor game from the first half. Bologna are the better prepared on obviously, they shut down the connection in the middle park of us and stopped our counter attacks which have been useful to create shooting opportunity in the previous games, Lazio simply looked tired and without any preparation for this tactical play of the opponents. Very poor game planning and lack of change to react, in addition to poor physical condition of the players (awful first touches of the ball and passive in pressing) are the main reasons of the defeat. Imo, it is the worst game in this season, such performance doesn’t deserve to play in UCL.
5-0 against Bologna, 0-6 home against Inter. This is not worthy of a club as Lazio and it would not happen during Sarri’s or Inzaghi’s tenure. This Lazio has way too many ups and downs. There is absolutely no consistency. Next to that we have winter signings that have made a handful of minutes, which I don’t understand. You can clearly see that the team is depleted and cannot continue like this. I am starting to have doubts if Baroni is the man for the job t.b.h.
Change your formation please
Avoid olders use them on emergency or last minute changes
Patrick always causes problems and pretends to be injured all the time
Provedal can not be main goapkeeper
Ghandouzi the worst in the team and play nearpy every game
Made the midfield very bad
what is our goals diff this season in total? have we scored more goals than we let in? why do we look like a old boys team? slow and dull.. i’m still in shock…
