Lazio manager Marco Baroni appears to be heading towards the exit door, according to some of the most trusted sources in the Italian press.
The Background
The 61-year-old was appointed by the Italian capital club last summer, and the early signs were all positive, with the Biancocelesti producing good results on all fronts during the first half of the season.
Nevertheless, the team suffered a steep decline in the second half of the campaign, culminating in a last-day defeat to Lecce that saw them miss out on European football next season.
Lazio & Marco Baroni Set to Split Paths
According to Sky Sport Italia journalist Gianluca Di Marzio, Baroni’s story at Lazio has reached its end credit, as the two parties are now preparing to hold talks in the coming days, which will likely result in a separation. The manager himself failed to rule out this possibility in his post-match interview on Sunday.
When Will the Meeting Take Place?
Alfredo Pedulla also talks about a strained relationship between Baroni and the hierarchy. The transfer market expert expects the decisive summit to take place this week, particularly between Wednesday and Thursday.
The Potential Replacements
Moreover, La Lazio Siamo Noi discussed the potential replacements, identifying Patrick Vieira and Miroslav Klose as two plausible candidates for the role. The French manager has done well since taking over from Alberto Gilardino at Genoa in mid-season, and his résumé includes experiences at OGC Nice and Crystal Palace.
Could Miroslav Klose Return to Lazio?
As for Klose, he is currently in charge of Nurnberg in the German second flight (2. Bundesliga), and he remains a popular figure at Lazio, having spent the last five years of his playing career at the Stadio Olimpico. He scored 63 goals and provided 35 assists in his 171 appearances for the Aquile between 2011 and 2016.
Lazio need proper and proven coach… not Viera or Klose. I want to see someone like Mancini, De Zerbi, Pioli, Italiano.
Either Sarri. Gilardino or keep Baroni at this point
De Zerbi would be my personal choice. But Lazio would have to pay big time for him. I also doubt he would leave Marseille after guiding them into the CL.
Apparently he wants to stay at OM… but yeah, he would be one of my priorities right there with Vincenzo of Bologna, but again, Bologna will play in Europe whereas Lazio not.
I’m sad for Baroni because I believe he would have done better in the next campaign. It is what it is, he failed in this one.
100% Baroni should come back. Give the guy a chance
