The 2024-25 Serie A season proved that the Italian premier division is by far the most underrated in Europe. A grandstand finish, not to mention some of the best celebrations you’ll find on the planet – thanks, Napoli fans – meant that, with virtually everything in Europe’s other leagues already wrapped up, all eyes were on Italy.
It wasn’t just the end of the season that was worth tuning in for, however. The whole season has been full of intrigue, with surprise packages and underperforming giants abound. Now that it’s all done and dusted, we thought it’d be a good idea to run through the season’s winners and losers. Let’s take a look.
Napoli & Antonio Conte: Unexpected League Champions
Did anyone, anyone, think that Napoli would end the 24/25 season as Serie A champions for the fourth time? If they did, they were pretty quiet back in August, when everyone we could think of predicted that Napoli would be facing another rebuilding year after the disappointment of the 23/24 campaign.
People who bet on Serie A will remember that, at the start of the season, Milan, Juventus, and eventual runners-up Inter were considered favourites for the Scudetto. So, what happened? Antonio Conte happened. Scott McTominay happened. Romelu Lukaku happened. This year, everything clicked, seemingly out of nowhere, and in the end, it was Gli Azzurri who got the last laugh.
Can they do it again next year? They’ll have better odds to win the title this time around, but with Conte leaving, it remains to be seen whether they can repeat the magic. But regardless of what happens, it’s been a season that’ll live long in the memory.
Inter & Simone Inzaghi: Close But No Cigar (Multiple Times)
Outsiders might think that this was a bad season for Inter Milan, but we’re sure the club themselves are reasonably happy with it. They didn’t win the title, sure, but that might be more down to Napoli’s determination than Inter’s shortcomings, though a few poor performances at a critical time of the season surely didn’t help.
They can be confident going into next season’s campaign, with bookmakers likely making them favourites for the title.
A Disappointing Campaign for Juventus
Of all the teams that were disappointing this season, none will be as rueful as Juventus. It wasn’t so long ago that La Vecchia Signora were undertaking a fresh, hopeful start under new manager Thiago Motta, but it wasn’t to be. A pretty disastrous season meant that Motta was deposed in March, with Igor Tudor coming in to steady the ship. Happily, a final-day victory meant that Juventus made it into next year’s Champions League. There are rumours that Antonio Conte, widely expected to leave Napoli despite taking them to league glory, may be moving to the Allianz Stadium. If Conte’s next stint at Juventus goes as well as his first — he won three titles in a row — then it’ll prove to be an inspired decision.
Roma: Claudio Ranieri’s Swansong
Roma will have been disappointed — and that’s putting it mildly — to have missed out on the Champions League positions on the first matchday, but the season turned out better than it looked during the early parts of the campaign. After a terrible start, Claudio Ranieri was brought in to steady the ship, and that’s exactly what he did. In the end, this season will be better known for Ranieri’s last moments in the dugout before retiring to move to a behind-the-scenes role. He’ll be missed.
Lazio & Marco Baroni: Exciting Start, Subpar Finish
Lazio’s 2024-25 season ended in disappointment, with the club finishing 7th in Serie A and missing out on European qualification after a final-day loss to Lecce. Manager Marco Baroni was subsequently fired. In a surprising move, Maurizio Sarri was reappointed as head coach, just 15 months after his previous resignation. Sarri’s return, highlighted by a humorous white smoke and cigarette lighter announcement, signals the club’s desire to rekindle their past success and challenge for European spots next season.
