Maurizio Sarri Wants Lazio Reunion With Former Chelsea Pupil

Lazio manager Maurizio Sarri is reportedly hoping to rekindle his collaboration with Milan midfielder Ruben Loftus-Cheek.

The 29-year-old is a youth product of Chelsea who enjoyed his best season at Stamford Bridge when Sarri was in charge. Even though the midfield was jammed with top stars, including the likes of Jorginho, N’Golo Kante, and Mateo Kovacic, the London native went on to make 40 appearances in the 2019/20 campaign, scoring 10 goals and producing five assists in the process.

Afterwards, Loftus-Cheek struggled for relevance at his original club, so he ended up signing for Milan in the summer of 2023. The Englishman enjoyed a decent first campaign under Stefano Pioli, but his performances dropped this season, while a series of muscle injuries kept him out of action for several months.

According to La Repubblica (via La Lazio Siamo Noi), Sarri could be interested in a reunion with Loftus-Cheek. The source recalls how the 66-year-old manager had already tried to acquire the services of his Chelsea pupil when he first arrived at Lazio in the summer of 2021, but to no avail.

Lazio Searching for a New Midfielder

At the moment, the Biancocelesti are in need of a new box-to-box midfielder to join Nicolo Rovella and Matteo Guendouzi in Sarri’s three-man midfield, but initial reports suggested that the management would prefer a young Italian player like Empoli’s Jacopo Fazzini, whose profile is drastically different to Loftus-Cheek’s.
