Lazio have reportedly entered the fray for Sunderland teenager Chris Rigg, who is one of the most sought-after young players in England.

The Background

The 18-year-old is an attacking midfielder who rose through the ranks of the Black Cats to become a pivotal player for the first team. This season, he helped the club achieve promotion to the Premier League after winning the Championship’s play-offs at the expense of Sheffield United. The Englishman registered four goals and one assist in 47 appearances.

Lazio Set Sights on Chris Rigg

According to Il Messaggero (via La Lazio Siamo Noi), the Biancocelesti are keeping close tabs on Rigg, even though poaching the teenager remains a daunting task amidst the stern competition for his services. After all, the midfielder is considered a top wonderkid and has been described as an ‘absolute diamond’ by his former coach, Steven Richardson.

Riggs’ Contract with Sunderland

Rigg’s equally impressive teammate, Jobe Bellingham, has already earned a transfer to Borussia Dortmund, so it remains to be seen what this summer will have in store for the Hebburn native. The 18-year-old’s contract will expire in June 2027, and Transfermarkt estimates his value at €20 million.

Lazio’s Alternative Options

Lazio are keen to add a technically sound midfielder to their ranks this summer, and in addition to Riggs, they are following several other profiles. The list includes Bologna’s Giovanni Fabbian, Milan’s Ruben Loftus-Cheek and Parma’s Simon Sohm.

  1. Lazio’s chance to sign any Premier League players is only by replicating the Nuno Tavares deal, loan with obligation/option to buy. But this is unlikely to happen with top players/wonderkids, only for surplus of requirements.

  2. Just like we were in the race for Fazzini, and he’s now signed with Fiorentina.

Let’s be honest, we’re going to settle for 2 or 3 serie b type players.

  3. Lazio couldn’t afford 3.5m never mind 35m. It’s more likely SAFC will be cherry picking from seria A .
