Will Maurizio Sarri Revert to Marco Baroni’s Lazio Formation?

Following the team’s weak showing in Como, Lazio manager Maurizio Sarri is expected to ring some changes ahead of Sunday’s contest against Hellas Verona.

Lazio Fell Flat in Como

The Biancocelesti were completely outplayed by Cesc Fabregas’ men who produced the style of football that Sarri was hoping to see from his team. The Lombardians prevailed by two unanswered goals, but the result could have been larger, as Ivan Provedel had to pull off some heroics, while the woodwork also thwarted an attempt from Mergim Vojvoda.

What Maurizio Sarri Plans to Do

As Il Corriere dello Sport explains, Sarri is taking a few days to assess the situation, but he’ll be expected to introduce some changes, whether in terms of playing style or the formation.

The Lazio manager complained that the team was too flat, as his players weren’t able to implement his style of play, built on quick passing and clever movement. Therefore, the Roman newspaper believes that Sarri-ball could be sacrificed, as the 66-year-old can’t find suitable players to implement his ideas, especially in the midfield.

Instead, the source suggests a more pragmatic approach built on vertical, direct plays. In fact, Lazio’s best play against Como came from a Mario Gila long ball that was brought down by Taty Castellanos, who went on to beat the goalkeeper, only to be denied by a marginal offside call.

Back to Marco Baroni’s System?

Moreover, CdS claims that a change of formation could be possible, as Sarri dropped his 4-3-3 in favor of a 4-2-3-1 system in the second half after bringing in Pedro and Boulaye Dia, evoking memories of Baroni’s formation from last season.

It should also be noted that the manager had tested a 4-3-1-2 system during pre-season, with Mattia Zaccagni playing behind the two strikers, so that could emerge as a possibility going forward.

  1. Play the 4-3-1-2… put Dia and cati upfront with zaca behind them. Play bashiru and cancellieri on the wings and Rovella in the middle. Pair Gila with Ramanogli. Lazzari is old and has lost his steam. He no longer makes his runs, convect basic or Belayane into right backs and leave tavares at the left. Change provedel to mandas and let’s lets play ball

  2. The problem is the players’ lack of brains and effort. Formation changes won’t help if there’s no will to fight.
