Lazio manager Maurizio Sarri opted to stick by the club through one of its darkest periods, and has been somewhat rewarded for his loyalty with a contractual gesture.

The Background

The former Napoli, Chelsea and Juventus boss had left the Biancocelesti in March 2024, citing family issues that coincided with a disappointing run for the team and some unrest in the locker room. Nevertheless, he made a choice of the heart last summer when making his return to Formello to replace Marco Baroni.

Maurizio Sarri’s Second Lazio Reign Began with Untimely Blow

Sadly for Sarri, his joyous comeback soon turned sour when he learned on June 23 that the club was slapped with a transfer ban, thus preventing the directors from signing the players he was promised. Nevertheless, the veteran manager refused to walk away. He has recently admitted that he wouldn’t have made this choice for any other club but Lazio.

According to Il Messaggero, Sarri’s gesture was appreciated by the hierarchy, who rewarded him with an immediate contract adjustment. As the source explains, the coach had initially signed a two-year deal valid until 2027 upon his return to the club, with an option for a third. However, this was adjusted on July 10, with two parties penning a three-year deal valid until 2028.

Maurizio Sarri & Lazio Signed Another Contract in July

While the salary remained intact (€2.5 million per year), this contract tweak shows that the club was delighted with the manager’s decision to dwell at Formello, as the directors didn’t want to rock the boat any further. This new contract has also been confirmed by Il Corriere dello Sport, which reported almost identical details.
