Three Positions Lazio Should Address This January Transfer Window

To say that the last five months at Lazio have been unusual would be a major understatement. From the last-gasp collapse under Marco Baroni last season, to Maurizio Sarri’s shocking return and the transfer ban that wrecked his comeback plans, the Biancocelesti have been enduring a chaotic patch, as the mediocre results on the pitch have hardly been surprising based on the current circumstances.

January Transfer Window Around the Corner

Nevertheless, Claudio Lotito and Angelo Fabiani have vowed to rectify the situation, starting with lifting the transfer ban in the coming weeks, which would allow the club to sign some direly needed reinforcement in January.

Although these promises have yet to materialize, Sarri is rightly preparing a list of targets ahead of what he hopes to be a fruitful winter market. After all, the 66-year-old was told he’d have the final say on the club’s transfer dealings upon his return to Formello.

But while the fans might argue that every position would do with an upgrade, Lazio can only pull off limited operations in January, especially if the new supervisory commission imposes some restrictions on their dealings.

Left-Back

Nuno Tavares might be one of Lazio’s hottest commodities, but his price tag has been plumetting with every disappointing outing or muscle injury.

The Portuguese is obviously not the sort of full-back that Sarri relishes, so Lazio would be wise to cut their losses and cash in on the 25-year-old as soon as possible, and bring in a more defensive-minded replacement capable of interpreting the manager’s ideas.

Box-to-Box Midfielder

This is arguably the mother of all priorities. Sarri’s system requires a ball-playing midfielder who can offer his contributions all over the pitch, and occasionally get on the scoresheet.

Unfortunately for the manager, the Fisayo Dele-Bashiru experiment has yet to pay off. As for Toma Basic, he has rightly won the plaudits for his enchanting revival, but his attacking impact remains limited.

Left Winger

While the candidates for the other roles remain mostly shrouded in mystery, this particular position has a clear frontrunner in Lorenzo Insigne, as he and Sarri are equally desperate to rekindle their collaboration.

On the other hand, Fabiani is said to be unconvinced by the idea of signing a 34-year-old free agent, as he prefers to bring in a younger understudy for Mattia Zaccagni.

Hence, this internal tug-of-war will indicate where the true power lies at Lazio.
