Lazio are still closely monitoring Genoa left-back Aaron Martin, as the future of Nuno Tavares remains up in the air.

Nuno Tavares Facing Uncertain Lazio Future

The former Arsenal star was an instant revelation last season, taking the entire league by storm in the early stages of the campaign. However, his momentum was interrupted by a series of muscle injuries, and his impact has dwindled ever since. The 25-year-old has also struggled to adjust to Maurizio Sarri’s system, which requires more defensive discipline compared to Marco Baroni’s.

The Transfer Ban

While the management was already aware of these factors in the summer, they decided against selling any of their main players last summer, as they weren’t able to replace them due to the transfer ban. At the moment, Lazio president Claudio Lotito is confident about solving the situation in the coming weeks, which would allow the club to make some changes in January.

Lazio Still Interested in Aaron Martin

According to Italian journalist Alfredo Pedullà, Lazio are paying close attention to Martin’s contract situation at Genoa, as they consider him the right profile to replace Tavares should the latter depart.

The 28-year-old is an Espanyol youth product who joined Genoa on a free transfer in the summer of 2023 after seeing out his deal with Mainz. The Spaniard has thus far made 69 appearances for the Grifone, providing his teammates with 10 assists.

Genoa Struggling to Tie Down Martin with New Contract

But this season, Martin has only made five appearances in Serie A, and has been dropped to the bench in recent weeks. The source believes this is due to his expiring contract. The Ligurians fear the left-back could leave the club on a free transfer at the end of the season, especially with Lazio keen to pounce on his services.

Nevertheless, Genoa won’t give up easily, as they remain hellbent on finding an agreement with the player’s entourage on a new contract, while the Biancocelesti will be gunning for either a free transfer in June, or a cut-price deal in January.
