Lazio midfielder Nicolo Rovella will finally go under the knife on Thursday to get rid of the groin damage that has been hampering him from the very start of the campaign.

The Background

The 23-year-old cemented himself as one of the best deep-lying playmakers in Serie A last season under Marco Baroni. However, Maurizio Sarri has hardly been able to rely on his services. Deranged by groin pain, the Genoa youth product wasn’t able to last for more than 45 minutes in the back-to-back outings against Sassuolo and Roma in September.

Nicolo Rovella Has No Other Option but Surgery

Rovella has been out of action ever since, but instead of undergoing surgery, he opted for alternative therapy. But after almost two months, the results were rather disappointing, as his groin hasn’t fully healed. Therefore, the player has finally decided to succumb to his fate, realising that only an operation can relieve him of this ordeal.

When Will Rovella Return?

According to Il Corriere dello Sport (via La Lazio Siamo Noi), Rovella’s surgery will most likely take place on Thursday. The Regista will be out of action for more than one month. At this stage, setting an exact timetable for his return remains premature, but the Roman newspaper believes that a comeback against Napoli on January 4 could be a realistic objective.

Will Lazio Sign a Replacement in January

In the meantime, Danilo Cataldi will continue to fill in for the former Juventus player at the heart of the lineup. Nevertheless, Sarri has reportedly requested the arrival of a new deep-lying playmaker in January, although this could hinge on the length of Rovella’s recovery.
