Revitalised Lazio Star Closing in on New Contract After Positive Meeting

Lazio are reportedly close to reaching an accord with Toma Basic and his entourage over a new contract.

The Background

The 29-year-old signed for the Italian capital side in the summer of 2021, but struggled to replicate the impressive form he showed during his three years at Bordeaux. In January 2024, he joined Salernitana on a six-month loan spell before rejoining the Biancocelesti the following summer. However, he failed to make a single appearance under Marco Baroni during the 2024/25 season.

This term, Basic was also omitted from Maurizio Sarri’s Serie A squad, but he was reinstated due to a full-blown crisis in September. Since then, he has been omnipresent in the lineup, cementing himself as a key player for Lazio with a series of impressive displays. Therefore, the manager has urged the hierarchy to extend his expiring contract.

Lazio & Basis Negotiating New Contract

According to Il Corriere dello Sport (via La Lazio Siamo Noi), the last 48 hours have witnessed a signigicant breakthrough on this front. As the Roman newspaper reveals, the players’ agents, Adrian Aliaj and Florian Myrtaj, attended Thursday’s Coppa Italia victory over AC Milan, and then held a meeting with the club’s officials on Friday morning.

The source believes Lazio and Basic are now close to reaching a full agreement on a new contract valid until June 2028. Nevertheless, a few details remain missing before the white smoke emerges, including Claudio Lotito’s ratification.

Can Lazio Renew Their Players’ Contracts?

It should be noted that Lazio have yet to lift the transfer ban, which also limits their ability to register new contracts with their current players. Nevertheless, the club is anticipating a development on this front by mid-December, although it remains to be seen if the ban will be completely or partially removed.

Either way, Basic’s new contract would only pose an issue if it entails a pay raise, which might not be the case. The  Croatian currently earns a yearly net salary of €1.6 million.

  1. The problem despite he is good player in middle and defend great been setting two years on bench and using Ghandouzi 😭

  2. If i was Basic agent, I would take my player away… you cant be treated like shit and called upon when things fell apart then they do a U-turn to give u a new contract and u taking it…

    1. And move where? He’ll join smaller clubs than Lazio in Premier League, La Liga or even Bundesliga.
And I’m not saying that Lazio is a giant club, it’s just at the moment, Lazio is the right place for him to cement his name.

  3. If last weeks reports are true, they can sell Guendouzi for 25m to Sunderland, then they could lift the transfer ban, resign Basic, while also getting Rovella back.

  4. This is a sensible move. Belahyane and Dele-Bashiru will be sold in January, maybe even Guendo. Vecino’s contract expires after this season and will not be renewed. So Basic is a must-have and he has been really good lately.
